AVOIDANCE! The Top Four Ways To Procrastinate In Home Business

Who here jumps right into doing the things they don’t want to do?

Who sees something that makes them feel scared, or inadequate, or dishonest and says, “Yeah, I think I’ll do that right now?”

Didn’t think so. I know I don’t.

There are a few different reasons why we avoid doing things that will build our home businesses. Let’s assume for a minute the Number One reason is fear. There are ways to deal with that. Lots of people have great material on overcoming fear. If you haven’t checked them out yet, it could be a life saver for your business.

But that’s not the focus of this article. What we’re talking about here is recognizing the ways we try to avoid doing the necessary work in home business. We think most of these are good, but in reality they take us further away from building an organization and making money.

1. OVERSTUDYING: Just about every home business program comes with a manual. Feeling like you have to know every nook and cranny of your business is a way to avoid actually working on it. There’s a feeling of security in knowing the details. And you definitely want to have some idea of what you’re doing. But studying the how to’s of your business doesn’t take the place of implementing it. It only allows you to become a very knowledgeable home business owner with no cash flow.

2. EXCESSIVE GROUP JOINING: The network and affiliate marketing worlds are full of support groups. Companies have them. Facebook has thousands of them. There are groups to help you be more accountable, gain confidence, even use your time more efficiently (HA!). These are all good things. In fact, you could spend every waking hour participating in these groups. And many of the people in them are doing the same thing: looking for ways to socialize around the idea of building a business without actually doing it. One or two groups that truly help you move forward is one thing. Being a “group groupie” is another.

3. BEING A CHRONIC HELPER: One of the funniest things I hear is people giving advice about something they have never done themselves. In the outside world we usually laugh about this. But it’s crazy how many people actually offer to “help” others build a website, find keywords, create graphics, etc. when their own businesses are stalled. Sometimes these people really know what they’re talking about. Often times it’s something they read in a book or a website, but haven’t done themselves. Most of the time it’s a way to avoid doing it themselves, but feel like they’re doing something constructive.

4. PERPETUAL PLANNING: This is my favorite avoidance technique. You have a plan to build your business. But the timing isn’t quite right. You want to wait until the circumstances of your life are better. So you’ll begin next week. Or next month. Or next year. After all, people don’t have money after the holidays. Or they’re shopping for the holidays. Or it’s too cold. Or the kids are still on vacation. Or your dandruff is coming back. There are plenty of reasons for waiting, and they all have one thing in common…they keep you out of action.

Recognize yourself in any of these? It’s cool. We’ve all been there. They tell you when you’re avoiding getting into action.

You have a choice. Stay in avoidance mode, or dump the procrastination and get into action!
